Earth Hour

A couple of minutes ago a global awareness event called Earth Hour started. The premise is that everyone are to turn off all lights, or basically everything plugged into a socket (which should include the very computer I am using for writing this on, but I can argue that I am using battery power at the moment).

The real saving may not be beneficial at all for the earth, but it does a good job of raising awareness! For instance, a well-known radio station in Sweden closes down transmission for the entire hour.

Looking out my window shows that most people in the area have in fact turned off their lights, TVs and everything else. It’s fun to see these kind of things reaching the great big mass. If only Twestival could have involved as many people!

The one bad thing is that Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, does not turn off the lights as many other European cities do. They argue that it doesn’t really do anything beneficial to the environment. They fail to see the benefits and the huge importance of awareness on a global scale. Not participating in this event will definitely spark som badwill for them.

And I guess the flashlight apps in the iPhone App Store have gained some enormous points because of this.
