Using SIP with the Nokia E61i and Gizmo

I usually have no use for a normal landline, but it does have its benefits. Since I will be moving to a new place soon with a 100/100 Mbit Internet connection, why not use it to the max? So I am trying SIP with my phone using Gizmo and their SIP service.

Setting things up could be a bit confusing, but the following settings works fine for me (for Gizmo):

  • Profile name: Gizmo
  • Service profile: IETF
  • Default access point: “my access point”
  • Public user name: sip:17472xxxx@proxy01.sipphone.com
  • Use compression: No
  • Registration: Always on
  • Use security: No
  • Proxy server: Do not fill in anything here
  • Registrar server address: sip:proxy01.sipphone.com
  • Realm: proxy01.sipphone.com
  • User name: 17472xxxxx
  • Password: “your password”
  • Transport type: UDP
  • Port: 5060

Now when ever I stumble upon an access point I have configured, the phone will connect the SIP phone automatically! The call quality seems to be really good after a first try, but we will see if it holds up.

Nokia has really managed to get a good SIP phone working in a simple yet effective way, and it is even possible to decide whether the calls should be routed over SIP by default or not.

I could definitely see this working in a corporate setting with an Asterisk server for VOIP and WLAN for connecting the phones to the networks. It is even possible to store a SIP number in the phone book for each contact, which makes this solution ideal.

I am looking for a SIP wireless phone, but I found some of the wireless SIP phone may have not have internet browser to enter the “username” and “password” which is required by most of the Wi-Fi hot spot such as McDonald restaurant. I wonder if Nokia e61 is cable of doing this?
    I would appreciate your help.

@Kai Liang I can’t see why this wouldn’t work on the E61i. Let me know if you decide to try it out!

I haven’t used that phone in particular, but I think you can choose to call using SIP when you have selected a number.

menu -> settings -> connectivity -> Admin Settings -> SIP Settings
then i made new profile there and it’s shown as “Registred”

when i ring to this SIP it doesn’t ring
also when i select number to call, i have not option to take the call through the SIP profile

I got it to work and here is what I have done:

    1. apply the SIP configuration as stated above under a name: Gizmo “can be named as u wish”
    2. create a new profile under Setting>Connection>Internet Tel. Settings (Make sure you select the SIP profile that you have configured above

After that you should be good to go

    Thanks Johnny and all

    Cheers,

    Great!

I got my E71 working following your instructions.

The only thing I had to change was where it says “17472xxxxx” the digit “2″ is not needed. I used the prefix “1747″ followed by my number.

    Thanks a lot.
