The sleeper has awaken
Yes, I’m still alive! It has been rather quiet here lately, and that’s mostly due to summertime and the fact that I started working at a new company not so long ago. (and that I have a new motorcycle)
The time has now come to start dedicating some precious minutes to the website once again, giving you lots of Linux insight as well as discussing other important issues. I have started by answering all comments in the mail server thread!
I am considering making a new design for the website (this time my own), since many of you readers have had complaints about the website not working correctly in non-free web-browsers. It will be easy on the eyes, light and will work well with mobile browsers.
So there you have it. Don’t forget to subscribe to the RSS feed, if you haven’t already.
Quiet please, I would like to hear the grass grow
It has been fairly quiet here last week, and the main reason for the absence of posts is that I have a new job! I can talk about that more later, but I will try to get back to the blog as soon as possible.
Please adjust your TV-set, this is incorrect
Yes, you do not need to adjust your glasses – you are seeing correctly. My website is using a new template again. If you are completely oblivious about what I am talking about, you must be following the RSS-feed. Head over to the website and check it out!
I don’t know why, but ever so often I get the urge to redo most things, not only websites. Other computer related stuff such as selecting the themes for the window manager and reordering the hard drive seems to happen sometimes. Also real-life stuff such as rearranging the furniture or perhaps even redecorating stuff in the apartment is based on the same urge.
It all boils down to that geeky I-want-to-tinker-with-this-and-see-if-it-can-be-made-better feeling most of us get. I laugh at “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”! Muahah I say! One day I will make my own theme for the website from scratch, but it’s hard to find the time at the moment.
Anyway, things might be a bit messy here in the beginning until I have a chance to iron out most bugs, and implement all necessary structural changes.
Cheers
Time for a refreshing restart
Having had lots of things do to lately, this website has been standing quite still. I have been living in Switzerland for a while, but I am now back in Sweden and hopefully have some more time to spare. I hope you will find the upcoming entries and articles interesting and fun to read.
I have also removed the asides section, which consolidates all entries to the same place. Easier for me, and easier for you.
First out is an article about how to keep you data secure. Subscribe to the RSS-feed and keep a look-out for it.
Enjoy!
Aggressive changes
I have updated the site categories and tags, which means that some external links may possibly give an error. I will monitor this to make sure that everything works out for the best. This is also the reason why your RSS-tool probably has flagged my latest 10 posts as updated. Note that no text has been changed, just the meta-data.
Changed hosting to Dreamhost
Instead of hosting this domain myself, I have now signed up with Dreamhost. They have everything one can ask for, and it is working wonderfully so far. Shell access, 1TB transfer and 20GB storage is all part of the deal.
So I have a deal for you: If you sign up for one or two year hosting, you will get $10 off if you enter the promo code CRAZYDAYS when signing up. Good for you, and you help support this site.
There has not been much activity here lately, and I am sorry for that. Hopefully things will start rolling again soon. If you are a Swede, you might want to check “En svensk i Schweiz” out. It is not really official yet, so schhh…
Server downtime
As your might have noticed, my server has been down the last 24 hours. This was mostly due to me moving to Kista.
The move went great, but I need to adjust to the smaller apartment size I guess.
Prepare for a move-in party this fall!
Information security tips
After working in a corporate environment for a while, one gets to know the security awareness of one’s co-workers. Often enough, you see users going out to lunch, forgetting to lock their computers or not using a screen-saver with a password.
Other important corporate security events include email worms, that can spread like fire among the cubicals of the corporate world.
I will try to highlight these and other issues, and hopefully I will have time to give one tip a week. The first tip will pop up in a couple of days, so keep your RSS-feed live. If you don’t want to subscribe to the site-wide RSS feed, this category has a separate RSS feed that you may use.
If you have any tips on what can be included in this series, do contact me by either mail or by commenting on this post.
It has finally happened
My old website has been migrated to this new one. Although this site is not done, it serves the purpose nicely. The most important pages have been redirected here using the mod_rewrite module, mentioned in an earlier post and I think it is working like a charm.
There are still some articles to migrate to this new environment. The articles are now written in OpenOffice and are exported to PDF and other formats as necessary.
I am currently in Stockholm, and in an hour or so, me and Jessica are going out in the city to do some shopping. I actually carry a note with me with things to buy. Well, it’s not exactly a real note, but entered as a Jotter note on my phone together with some other things.
New domain
Here is my new domain, and I am trying out WordPress. Hopefully, this will replace my former Plone site, which was too big for me as a single user. As WordPress is made in PHP, I can use an accelerator to store compiled versions of the pages for faster retrieval.
I noticed that there are some moblog plugins for WordPress, and I will install it later and have a go. Hopefully it will work fine.
