The Martian (2015) is the movie about astronaut Mark Watney who has been stranded on Mars after being presumed dead by his crew after a big storm made them abruptly abort the mission. Now that he is stranded on Mars with dwindling supplies, he must do what it takes to stay alive and hope for rescue.
After having recently read the book, it becomes impossible to not compare the two versions. One of the biggest differences are the nerdy nitty-gritty technical details which for the most part have been left out in the movie. It’s not too bad of a thing to leave these things out though, since it’s quite hard to make these kinds of things visually interesting1.
The missing science didn’t bother me as much as when Mark was headed to the next landing site where he had some major trouble, both with the environment and this vehicle, all this missing from the movie. Without divulging too much of the story, I’m guessing that there could have been some substantial amazing scenes if those scenes would have made it into the movie.
The movie is quite artistic and visually appealing and the scenes on Mars are absolutely stunning! What really stood out though was the cast itself, which I found to be a great fit for almost every character.
Score: 8/10 (Great)
Remember the TV show called Numb3rs? When the main character performed his mathematical calculations, there would be numbers superimposed on the screen. ↩
